Investing in a healthy tomorrow with Allianz Sustainable Health Evolution

Hooray! We’re getting older!

Back in 1900, average life expectancy in Germany was just 40.6 years for men and 44 years for women. By 2018, this had increased to 78.5 and 83.3 years respectively.1 Improved medical care, higher living standards and better hygiene have been instrumental in prolonging life. Not just in Germany, but all around the world, people are getting older. This is making sustainable healthcare even more important.

More than just medical treatment: the factors influencing our health

How healthy we are depends on both our behaviour and our environment. Eating healthier food and being more active are growing global trends - technological progress is helping us with these. Fitness trackers tell us whether we have taken enough steps, connected devices are making life easier for diabetics, and telemedicine is playing a growing role in patient care during the coronavirus pandemic. Yet our environment is also crucial. Polluted air, the use of asbestos in residential buildings, poor working conditions in underground mines, lack of access to clean water, the adoption of unhealthy Western eating habits in developing countries – are just some examples of factors impacting our health. Improving overall health globally can therefore be multifaceted and take many different forms.

What can we do to live longer?

The ten most common causes of death are largely associated with slow-onset diseases that are to some extent avoidable

  • Lifestyle changes (behaviour, nutrition),
  • medical progress, and,
  • digitalization (especially artificial intelligence) are all important in identifying diseases at an early stage and taking action.
  • In many cases, however, this relies on first improving access to healthcare services. That will take investment.

The global healthcare market is expected to grow to USD 11.9 trillion by 2022. (2018: USD 8.45 trillion). Annual growth is predicted at 8.9%.2

Investing involves risk. The value of an investment and the income from it may fall as well as rise and investors might not get back the full amount invested. Investing in fixed income instruments may expose investors to various risks, including but not limited to creditworthiness, interest rate, liquidity and restricted flexibility risks. Changes to the economic environment and market conditions may affect these risks, resulting in an adverse effect to the value of the investment. During periods of rising nominal interest rates, the values of fixed income instruments (including positions with respect to short-term fixed income instruments) are generally expected to decline. Conversely, during periods of declining interest rates, the values of these instruments are generally expected to rise. Liquidity risk may possibly delay or prevent account withdrawals or redemptions. The volatility of fund unit/share prices may be increased or even strongly increased. Past performance does not predict future returns. If the currency in which the past performance is displayed differs from the currency of the country in which the investor resides, then the investor should be aware that due to the exchange rate fluctuations the performance shown may be higher or lower if converted into the investor’s local currency.
